During the time when the new world was being discovered, Spanish thinkers were reflecting on the idea of rights. They knew that the native Indians of America were dealt with very harshly and that the explorers did not treat them as they would their own countrymen. The explorers did not even acknowledge the Indian’s human rights. This caused the Spanish thinkers to readdress the idea of human rights. They realized that everyone, even the Indians, had rights that should be respected because human rights were given by God to everyone.
