English Class: American Literature

The Good And The Bad

Americans to you both young and old
I give you a story that has been much told
Of our early founding and how it began
And of what we could learn, the good and the bad

The early Americans their liberty to hold
Had resisted infringements from their motherland of old
And though the dangers they took were quite great
Together they rallied for ‘liberty or death’

But this I must tell you the truth must be known
Some of their acts we cannot condone
When they themselves their honor did leave
By tarring and feathering those that wouldn’t believe

I tell the story the good and the bad
So that it be known the faults our founders had
However imperfect the story played out
We must admit that they knew what they were about
